Kagan Hearings Start Today

Elana Kagan's Supreme Court hearing start today, and you can get up-to-the-minute information here on Townhall's blog throughout the entire process. We have two of the brightest legal minds covering the events: Ken Klukowski, D.C.-based attorney, journalist, and fellow and senior legal analyst with the American Civil Rights Union, and Ilya Shapiro, a senior fellow in constitutional studies at the Cato Institute and editor-in-chief of the Cato Supreme Court Review. It should be noted that Klukowski and Shapiro frequently have differing opinions on legal matters, and we're looking forward to hearing different perspectives as the hearings progress.

Even the Washington Post calls Kagan an "especially elusive target: a politically savvy operator," and one that promises to give Republicans a challenge when they try to call her out for her liberal activism. That's because there's a spotty paper trail — no long record of legal opinions, since Kagan has never been a judge. But the papers that are available express some strong views on abortion, military protection, and the Second Amendment, and Republicans will be sure to explore her views that are available as thoroughly as possible. It will make for some some great legal dialogue and even better national television.
