Rick Santorum decisively won North Dakota with 40% of the vote, a full 13 points ahead of Ron Paul, who finished 2nd.
Paul was counting on a good showing here tonight. He typically fares better in caucus states, largely due to the dedication and enthusiasm of his supporters. Speaking at the caucus in Fargo, ND, Paul emphasized his difference from the other candidates in monetary and foreign policy issues. This was enough to get him 27% of the vote.
Romney hoped to repeat his 2008 win when he took 37% of the vote. Instead, less than one quarter of caucus attendees voted for him.
