Rubio: Republicans Are "Compassionate" And Care About the Plight of Illegal Immigrants

On Sunday, Florida Senator Marco Rubio sat down with David Gregory on Meet the Press to promote his memoir and discuss the issue of immigration. Most significantly, perhaps, Rubio asserted that the vast majority of Republicans ultimately sympathize with the plight of illegal immigrants. And yet, he continued, they also understand that “America cannot be the only country in the world that doesn’t enforce its [own] immigration laws.” He touched on the fact that thousands of his constituents (I never knew this) visit his office every year looking for ways to expedite the legal immigration process. The president’s executive order, he reminded viewers, cheats foreign nationals who’ve been waiting patiently in line for years -- perhaps even decades -- to come to the United States. (Incidentally, this is a reality I suspect amnesty advocates often forget). And while he dismissed the DREAM ACT as much “too broad,” he did concede that comprehensive immigration reform is a long-term goal of the Republican Party, a goal that cannot be met through executive fiat or unilateral action during an election year.
