RIP: Sen. Edward Kennedy Dies at 77

Sen. Edward M. Kennedy died late Tuesday night at his home in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts.  He was 77 and had been battling brain cancer.  In office since November 1962, Kennedy served nine terms as a United States Senator.  He was a stalwart and outspoken proponent of liberal causes and bills, and came to be known as the "Lion of the Senate."

Kennedy has been battling a malignant brain tumor, first diagnosed in May 2008, which greatly limited his appearances in the Senate.  Though he survived longer than doctors first expected, he passed away just before midnight last night at age 77.

Please Note: Please keep comments respectful.  As Townhall member mzJakes notes:
There will be plenty of time in the weeks and months to come to discuss and analyze Ted Kennedy's legacy for good or ill. But for now, America has lost an iconic figure, and the Kennedy clan has lost a beloved son, father and grandfather. Whatever one's political leanings, this is a time for all Americans to reach out and extend and express heartfelt condolences to the Kennedy family.
