Democrats seized the opportunity to trap the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases into “gotcha” questions, in an attempt to create a divide between Dr. Fauci and President Trump. Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA), formerly a vice presidential candidate, cited botched data in an effort to get Dr. Fauci to undermine the administration’s efforts.
Sen. Kaine said US has 7th highest per capita Coronavirus death rate in the world. That’s flatly false. I suspect his ‘7th worst’ claim is based on this data, which, among other things, requires taking Chinese & Iranian stats at face value. USA Today fact-check in late April: pic.twitter.com/ROSSpITBDA

Sen. Kaine tried to insinuate that the Trump Administration’s response was subpar by comparing the United States’ testing to that of South Korea:
“So to Dr. Fauci, the death toll in the United States, especially when compared to other nations, is unacceptable, isn’t it?”
After a series of other attempted “gotcha” questions, Dr. Fauci pushed back on Sen. Kaine’s partisan grandstanding:

“I understand where you’re going with this, but I have to tell you there’s a big difference between South Korea and the U.S. as to the nature of the outbreak,” Dr. Fauci said.
