Former 2018 Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams defended Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden from the sexual assault allegation made against him by former Senate aide Tara Reade.
Reade claims Biden sexually assaulted her in a hallway with his fingers when she was delivering a duffel bag in 1993.
Abrams, who has been lobbying to be the vice presidential candidate, said she knows Biden and he would never do such a thing like that. Abrams pointed to a 2-week old New York Times story that did not find any more evidence to support Reade's claims. Since then, Business Insider reported how a former neighbor of Reade has come forward to say they were told about the alleged incident in the mid-'90s.
"I believe that women deserve to be heard and they need to be listened to. But I also believe that those allegations have to be investigated by credible sources. The New York Times did a deep investigation and they found that the accusation was not credible," Abrams told CNN anchor Don Lemon. "I believe Joe Biden. I believe that he is a person who demonstrated his love of family, of our community, has been made perfectly clear through his work as a congressional leader, and as an American leader. I know Joe Biden and I think he’s telling the truth and that this did not happen."
Lemon then asked Abrams about a tweet she sent in support of Christine Blasey Ford after she testified against then-Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh, and if she was applying a different standard with Biden.

"Not at all. I believe then and I believe now women deserve to be heard and too often they are not. She deserved to have her story heard and investigated. What was happening to Christine Blasey Ford was that there was no investigation. There was a rush to move it forward so no investigation was conducted. And as I said, I believe that those allegations needed to be investigated and I believe the New York Times and subsequent reports support what the Biden campaign said and I believe Joe Biden," Abrams said.
"You said you have heard her and heard enough and don’t believe her. You believe Joe Biden," Lemon said.
"What I’m saying is the New York Times investigation of her allegations doesn’t support the accusation against the vice president. I believe Biden and I think he will make women proud, he will make America proud," Abrams replied.
