Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and one of the top officials on the Wuhan Coronavirus Task Force, says that this treatment is not 100 percent confirmed, but thousands of doctors have been prescribing it worldwide and say it’s effective against the virus. Hydroxychloroquine is an anti-malarial drug that reportedly has seen very positive results in the field. President Trump has touted it, though some people, like a couple in Arizona, took fish tank cleaner with a similar sounding name and got poisoned from it. The drug they took was used to curb parasitic infections in fish. The husband died, while the wife was in critical condition. Of course, the media tried to blame Trump. Yet, in Michigan, one Democrat is praising the president and the drug for saving her life when she contracted the virus.
Congratulations to State Representative Karen Whitsett of Michigan. So glad you are getting better! https://t.co/v6z46rUDtg

State Rep. Karen Whitsett was diagnosed in March and was prescribed hydroxychloroquine. Her husband also exhibited symptoms of the disease. For her, she said that she started to feel relief in about two hours. She had previously taken the drug from a past Lyme Disease diagnosis, but said she would have never have guessed it as a possible treatment for COVID-19 (via Detroit Free Press):
"If President Trump had not talked about [hydroxychloroquine], it would not be something that's accessible" in Michigan "because of an order that was put down in my state," said State Rep. Karen Whitsett, adding she was "terrified" after being diagnosed with the coronavirus. pic.twitter.com/EGqPVpyBVu

A Democratic state representative from Detroit is crediting hydroxychloroquine — and Republican President Donald Trump who touted the drug — for saving her in her battle with the coronavirus.
State Rep. Karen Whitsett, who learned Monday she has tested positive for COVID-19, said she started taking hydroxychloroquine on March 31, prescribed by her doctor, after both she and her husband sought treatment for a range of symptoms on March 18.
"It was less than two hours" before she started to feel relief, said Whitsett, who had experienced shortness of breath, swollen lymph nodes, and what felt like a sinus infection. She is still experiencing headaches, she said.
Whitsett said she was familiar with "the wonders" of hydroxychloroquine from an earlier bout with Lyme disease, but does not believe she would have thought to ask for it, or her doctor would have prescribed it, had Trump not been touting it as a possible treatment for COVID-19.
Let’s hope there are more results like State Rep. Whitsett. We need a stopgap treatment until a proper vaccine is created, manufactured, and deployed rapidly, which could take up to at least a year, maybe longer. Still, with the absence of a vaccine, this drug appears to be the best treatment method out there.
