California Gov. Newsom: I'd Be Lying If I Said Trump 'Hasn’t Been Responsive to Our Needs'

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) told CNN's Jake Tapper on Wednesday that he would be lying if he said President Trump has been ignoring his state's needs to combat the ongoing Wuhan coronavirus outbreak.

Trump has been receiving praise from Democratic governors who he usually spars with during normal times, but, as has been often repeated, these are not normal times. Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) has also praised certain actions that Trump's administration has taken to help the much harder hit state of New York.

"I’ve been consistent, and Jake, know this, we’ve been dealing with historic wildfires and droughts in the west, in California. I’ve always said, I said it a year ago, this is not a time to bicker. I don’t care who is up and down, whose polls are looking better than someone else’s or who wants to run for president or who doesn’t. In a time of crisis, we need to rise above the partisanship. I’ve extended always an open hand and not a closed fist in those circumstances," Newsom said.

"I would be lying to you if I said [Trump] hasn’t been responsive to our demands. Every time I’ve called the President, he’s quickly gotten on the line. When we asked to get support for that 'Mercy' ship for southern California, he was able to direct that in real time. We have 2,000 of these field medical sites that are up, almost all operational now in the state because of his support. Those are the facts," he continued. "We always want more. I could criticize this or that. At the end of the day, we’re just trying to focus on developing a relationship of trust as a matter of course because there’s too many Americans, 40 million, that live in this state that deserve for to us get together and get along."

The Sacramento Bee reports there are 7,476 people in the state of California who have tested positive with the coronavirus as of Tuesday and the month of March saw 150 related deaths.
