A member of the 18th-Street criminal gang wanted by El Salvador has been removed from the United States by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO), according to an ICE statement. The illegal alien's latest arrest marks the fourth time the illegal alien has been found to have illegally reentered the country.
Jamie Omar Vasquez-Benitez, 40, was wanted by law enforcement officials in El Salvador for extortion. Vasquez-Benitez was a Mexican citizen and documented member of the 18th-Street transnational criminal street gang.
In Nov. 1997, Vasquez-Benitez was arrested near Douglas, Arizona, by Border Patrol agents. He voluntarily returned to Mexico but illegally reentered sometime later.
In May 2005, he was arrested by the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C., on charges of first-degree sexual abuse and obstruction of justice. He was sentenced to 36 months in prison and then removed to El Salvador by ERO.
The criminal alien was again arrested in Feb. 2014 near Falfurrias, Texas, and once again removed to El Salvador a short time later.
The D.C. Metropolitan Police Department came across him again in July 2018, and Vasquez was found guilty of illegal reentry after removal in Nov. 2019.
ICE announced that Vasquez was most recently removed from the United States via air charter and turned over to El Salvadorian officials.
