Former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro is out. Yeah, I know—you probably forgot he was running for president. Well, he was—and now he’s done. Castro barely registered on the map in this crowded field. His RealClearPolitics average in the polls was around two-to-three percent. It was dismal. There was no way Castro was going to break out and overtake Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, Joe Biden, or even Pete Buttigieg. When it becomes painfully obvious that you will never win the nomination, it’s best to just stop (via Politico):
Former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro announced Thursday he is ending his campaign for president.
“I’ve determined that it simply isn’t our time,” Castro said in a video.
Castro ending his bid leaves the Democratic primary field without a Latino candidate, and his exit comes one month before the Iowa caucuses.
Oh yes, so we can expect to hear more complaints about how the 2020 Democratic field is now whiter than Wonder Bread. Castro was Latino. Good for him; voters obviously thought the top tier consisted of more serious candidates who happen to be white. It’s not really that hard. The best person for the job will rise to the top. And on paper, a former vice president pretty much seals the deal. Two left-wing senators with better name recognition might also edge you out in the fundraising game as well. Castro had no chance, but hey—this experience could lead to him running for other things. He’s not done. Neither of the Castro brothers is done.
