President Trump announced Thursday afternoon the United States will officially recognize the Golan Heights as Israeli territory.
After 52 years it is time for the United States to fully recognize Israel’s Sovereignty over the Golan Heights, which is of critical strategic and security importance to the State of Israel and Regional Stability!

The announcement comes while Secretary of State Mike Pompeo meets with officials in Israel. Next week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will meet with President Trump at the White House.

1. This is a long overdue statement by a US president. It is impossible to imagine the Israelis handing over this territory to Syria, especially now, with Syria in utter disarray, and after years of Assad regime atrocities.
2. The only real controversy about this tweet is timing, just weeks before the Israeli elections. It will undoubtedly be viewed by some–if not many–as a boost for Benjamin Netanyahu & Likud as they engage in a hard fought battle against Benny Gantz & his Blue and White Party.

3. It might have been prudent for Trump to wait until after the April 9 elex before tweeting. At the same time, I dont see this having much impact on the "deal of the century." This a Syria issue. Although Pals might say it's another perk granted to Israel.

4. One thing to watch right now is whether Iran responds to this move by provoking Israel from its military installations in Syria. This theater has seen repeated provocations by Iran and responses by Israel. It’s hard to imagine that Iran will let this slide.
