Today is the 74thAnniversary of D-Day. On this day, June 6th, 74 years ago in 1944, Allied forces invaded Normandy beaches during WWI. It was the battle that signaled the drawing to a close of the war. The mission was originally codenamed Operation Overlord, and today we know it as D-Day.
Roughly 156,000 American, British and Canadian forces landed along the 50-mile stretch of five different beaches which formed the coast of France’s Normandy region. There are five separate beaches that form the Normandy beaches of D-Day: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword.
