Washington, D.C. - White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer had two key takeaways from his unfortunate gaffe Tuesday when he compared the Assad regime’s chemical attack to Hitler’s Holocaust. He has since issued an apology, but in a conversation with Greta Van Susteren at the Newseum Wednesday, he offered a few more remarks.
Spicer was especially dismayed by his “reprehensible” gaffe because “it’s a very holy week,” he told Susteren.
Christians around the world are preparing to celebrate Easter this weekend.
“Of all weeks, this compounds that kind of mistake,” he said. “It really is painful to myself because that obviously was not my intention.
“There’s no comparing atrocities,” he continued. “I would ask for folks’ forgiveness.”
He was also disappointed on a professional level. The president, he said, has had an "unbelievable couple of weeks of accomplishments" and his job as spokesperson is to help amplify those successes. Unfortunately, he served as a “distraction” this week.
Spicer said he has yet to talk to Trump since the gaffe.
