Maine Gov. Certifies Recreational Marijuana Election Results

Maine Gov. Paul LePage (R) has certified the results of Question 1, which legalizes marijuana for recreational purposes throughout the state. Question 1 passed by about 4,000 votes on Election Day, but was the subject of a recount that did not change the election results. Marijuana will officially become legal in the Pine Tree State on January 30, but will not be available commercially for quite some time.

Mainers over the age of 21 will now be allowed to possess 2.5 ounces of marijuana and will be permitted to grow six plants.

LePage has been a vocal opponent of marijuana legalization in Maine, and he has called for a moratorium on weed sales until a regulatory system is properly in place and funded.
