Yesterday during a town hall forum hosted by MSNBC, Donald Trump was asked by host Chris Matthews if he believed women who seek or obtain abortions should be punished. He said yes.
After the pro-life movement quickly condemned Trump's remarks, pointing out how completely out of touch he is on the issue of abortion and how to treat women in crisis pregnancies, the GOP candidate attempted to clarify.
“If Congress were to pass legislation making abortion illegal and the federal courts upheld this legislation, or any state were permitted to ban abortion under state and federal law, the doctor or any other person performing this illegal act upon a woman would be held legally responsible, not the woman,” Trump issued in a statement on his Facebook page. “The woman is a victim in this case as is the life in her womb. My position has not changed — like Ronald Reagan, I am pro-life with exceptions.”
After the "clarification," top Trump surrogate Ben Carson (who Trump called a pedophile when Carson was still a rival for the White House), explained to CNN the reason why his candidate screwed up the question.
"I don’t believe that he was warned that that question was coming, and I don’t think he really had a chance to really think about it," Carson said.
Woof. Abortion questions in a presidential race? C'mon. Trump needs warnings about upcoming questions in order to answer them now? Please. There is no crying in baseball and there are no warnings about questions when you're running for president.
This isn't about Donald Trump being unprepared for the question. Instead, it's about Trump being completely out of touch with the pro-life movement and pro-life principles while claiming to be, pro-life.
