Planned Parenthood Under Investigation for Possible Misuse of Taxpayer Funding

The Government Accountability Office, the office responsible for exposing the waste fraud and abuse within the federal government, is investigating abortion giant Planned Parenthood.

Planned Parenthood received more than a half billion dollars in federal funding last year. The GAO’s investigation is in response to a request made by more than 50 members of Congress in February who asked for a detailed report on how money is being used by Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers across the country.

Specifically, lawmakers want to know what procedures and services they provided and the number of people who were served and how much it cost.

The GAO’s investigation comes on the heels of a settlement involving a Texas affiliate of the organization, which paid $4.3 million in July to settle allegations of fraud in billing to a health program for the poor. The settlement was $3 million more than what had been announced earlier by the Texas Attorney General.

However, when finalizing the settlement, which included state and federal recovery money, Planned Parenthood strongly refuted claims it has frequently over-billed the system.

Planned Parenthood received a record amount of tax dollars last year and performed a record amount of abortions.

“Planned Parenthood performed a record 333,964 abortions last year – almost 1 million in the past three years. At the same time, they also received more federal taxpayer dollars than ever before – a record $542 million, an 11 percent increase over the past two years. Planned Parenthood and other organizations that provide abortions clearly benefit from Uncle Sam, but there’s no accounting to prove how they actually use that money. This GAO report would shine a light on how our tax dollars are being spent.”

In 2011, the pro-life group LiveAction exposed Planned Parenthood for fraudulent claims the organization provides mammograms.

LiveAction also found at least eight Planned Parenthood clinics around the country are willing to cover up statutory rape.
