About That Image Showing a Starving Gazan Child...the NYT Had to Admit Something

We’re back to this again: legacy media outlets peddling terrorist propaganda and then being forced to issue retractions or corrections that undercut the premise of the article, if not outright expose it as fake news.

The New York Times was forced to issue a correction about the conditions in Gaza, where reports of starvation have led to worldwide condemnation. Even Donald Trump says the United States is going to open food centers. That’s all well, but let’s not forget these conditions remain the fault of Hamas, which refuses to release the rest of the Israeli hostages. The Times’ story of a malnourished baby is what poured fuel on anti-Israel fires yet again, and then this detail emerged.

The baby is malnourished due to pre-existing conditions. Now, this isn’t entirely fake news, as Gaza is a bombed-out region, thanks to Hamas launching a genocidal invasion of Israel on October 7, 2023. They started a war they couldn’t win and have deliberately increased the suffering of their civilian population to place pressure on Israel since they know there are enough antisemites, media outlets, and all-around idiots who would buy their nonsense. Still, all the reports and figures coming out of Gaza are tailored by Hamas, but here’s the passage that had to be tweaked by the publication (via NYT):

Hollow-eyed, skeletal children languish on hospital beds or are cared for by parents, who gaze helplessly at protruding ribs and shoulder blades, and emaciated limbs resembling brittle sticks. The haunting scenes are a stark contrast to the plenty that exists just a few miles away, across the borders with Israel and Egypt.

Mohammed Zakaria al-Mutawaq, who is about 18 months old and was born during the war, lives with his mother and brother in a tent on a Gaza beach.

Mohammed’s mother, Hedaya al-Mutawaq, 31, said the toddler’s father was killed last October when he went out to seek food.

“I walk the streets looking for food,” she said by phone, her voice barely audible. The charity kitchens she relies on to help feed Mohammed and his brother, Joud, 3, cannot always help, and they go hungry. “As an adult, I can bear the hunger,” she said. “But my kids can’t.”

Mohammed, according to his doctor, had pre-existing health problems affecting his brain and his muscle development. But his health deteriorated rapidly in recent months as it became increasingly difficult to find food and medical care, and the medical clinic that treated him said he suffers from severe malnutrition.

In war, these things happen, which is why it’s horrible—I’m not saying anything new here. It’s why we should do everything we can to avoid war, and Israel didn’t do anything to justify Hamas’ prolonged campaign of rape, murder, and torture on that dreadful day they invaded southern Israel.

Israel has been doing air drops of food and other supplies for civilians, though the equally anti-Israeli UN says it’s not enough. If anything has been exposed during this war, it’s that antisemites and Hamas sympathizers have infiltrated a great many institutions over the years.
