Kerry Blasts Trump's Decision to Leave Iran Deal: 'Breaks America's Word'

Former U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry blasted President Trump’s decision to leave the Iran deal Tuesday, claiming it “breaks America’s word.”

“Today's announcement weakens our security, breaks America's word, isolates us from our European allies, puts Israel at greater risk, empowers Iran's hardliners, and reduces our global leverage to address Tehran's misbehavior while damaging the ability of future administrations to make international agreements,” Kerry claimed in a statement he posted to Twitter shortly after Trump’s announcement.

"Instead of building unprecedented nonproliferation verification measures, this decision risks throwing them away and dragging the world to the brink we faced a few years ago,” he added.

According to media reports over the weekend, Kerry had been meeting with Iranian and European officials in an effort to undercut Trump and save the Iran deal.

President Trump tweeted Monday that “the United States does not need John Kerry’s possibly illegal Shadow Diplomacy on the very badly negotiated Iran Deal. He was the one that created this MESS in the first place!”

He officially announced that the U.S. would be leaving the Iran deal Tuesday.

"I am announcing today the United State will withdraw from the Iran Nuclear deal," Trump said. "This is a horrible, one sided deal that should have never been reached..It didn't bring calm, it didn't bring peace and it never will.

Former President Obama also responded at length to Trump's decision to leave the deal, claiming it was a "serious mistake."
