The FBI Has Released a Letter Andrew McCabe Wrote to Agents After James Comey Was Fired

The Federal Bureau of Investigation released two documents Wednesday afternoon directly related to the firing of former FBI Director James Comey in May 2017.

The first document is an email from Attorney General Jeff Sessions to the FBI informing the agency President Trump had made the decision to remove Comey from his position.

"The President of the United States has exercised his lawful authority to remove James B. Comey, Jr., as the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. By operation of law and effective immediately, Deputy Director Andrew McCabe assumed the position of Acting Director of the FBI," Sessions wrote. "As you well know, the FBI is an exceptional law enforcement and intelligence agency. It is made so by you, the devoted men and women who work tirelessly to keep our country safe. Thank you for your steadfast dedication and commitment during this time of transition."

McCabe, who assumed the position of FBI acting director, then followed up with his own official letter to agents at the "end of a tough week."

In the letter, which can be read in full below, McCabe expressed regret for Comey's absense, said the FBI "misses him" and reminded agents about their mission to remain true to the Constitution.

McCabe has been under fire in recent weeks after text messages between two FBI agents showed a meeting was held in his office about implementing an "insurance policy" should Donald Trump win the White House. He plans to retire in the spring.
