You have to be kidding me: this cannot be real. If Gavin Newsom is trying to decide whether to run in 2028 — I assume he is — then this isn’t a good sign. He wants to be the herpes outbreak of politics: the itch that never goes away, embodying why the Democrat Party’s brand is so toxic. It’s simple: they’re condescending busybodies. It reminds me of an old saying Erick Erickson used to say about the Left, their war cry — they will make you care. I used to say there’s no such thing as being Switzerland, but mostly there’s no safe space, which is the height of irony.

Any activity where politics would be the last place to pop up is where the Left will try to nudge in. I mean, read this (via NY Post) [emphasis mine]:

Newsom’s email lays out a new “digital” political operation his PAC is launching to help elect Democrats — and spread the gospel of Newsom — by training supporters to implant Newsom’s talking points into family text chains, alumni Facebook groups and other online communities, where politics isn’t typically discussed.

“A lot of those spaces aren’t political at all,” the email says. “That’s the point.”

Instead of hoping campaign ads or official social media posts reach persuadable voters, Newsom’s PAC — which raised $250,000 after announcing he and his wife are under FBI investigation — will be holding training sessions every Tuesday for the next eight weeks to teach people to digest Newsom’s messaging and regurgitate it to friends, family and associates in their own words.

“So the task isn’t forwarding talking points or propaganda,” the email says. “It’s taking what we send you and translating it for people you understand better than we do.”

The email adds, “The person already in that room is the only one who can get a message in, and the only one who knows how to say it so it doesn’t feel out of place.”

I’ve seen enough. No. This has blowback written all over it. You need exceptional political skills to pull this off, with equally talented staff — Democrats don’t have that anywhere. They have a lot of vocal, feisty antisemites, but no guru politicos anymore.

When Nate Silver says, “FYI the only humane policy is a lifetime ban from the groupchat to anyone who does this.” You know it’s a bad idea.
