The University of Akron is offering the most absurd season ticket promotion in living memory ahead of the 2026-2027 college football season, where ticket holders are eligible for a drawing to work as the offensive coordinator for the team’s opening drive of their first game.

The tickets cost as low as $75 depending on the seats available and are already fairly limited considering how poor Akron’s football program is. You can get extra entries by referring others to become season ticket holders as well. The drawing will be held on August 19, and I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if they sold out by then.

How an FBS program stooped as low as this is hard to believe. Thousands of tickets were definitely sold, but it’s not like any of these people are going to be attending the games. Countless seats will go unfilled throughout the entire season for a promotion that, at best, made them a few hundred thousand dollars. Is having almost no one in attendance for your home games worth that? Considering that it’s Akron, there’s a fairly solid chance that one was showing up anyway though.

Still, none of this even considers the possibility that Akron actually loses its game. Crazier things have happened than an FBS school losing to an FCS school at home. I really wouldn’t consider Akron of all schools to be impervious to the possibility of an upset. In 2024, they only eked out an 11-point win over an FCS opponent.

I’m all for watching some random fan try to lead an offense to a score. I think it’ll be hilarious to watch and can’t wait for Sept. 12 to watch the opening drive. I just can’t believe the Akron brain trust came up with the idea. Might as well throw $75 away for the chance to blow Akron’s season just for the fun of it.
