'Oscar Worthy' Biopic Film 'King Richard' Receives 'The American Dream' Featurette

Last month, the trailer was released for "King Richard," the biopic about Richard Williams, the coach and father to tennis champions Serena and Venus Williams, played by Oscar nominated Will Smith. The film, which is set to be released in theaters and on HBO Max on Friday, also just recently received a featurette on "The American Dream."

Smith, who also produced the film, presents to viewers how "King Richard" is "about family... belief... love, and triumph." Another producer, Trevor White, points out that "we think about Venus and Serena today, they're these global super stars, but, what we don't often think about is what they had to overcome to become these women."

Production notes provided to Townhall also highlight the deep sense and importance of family involved. "Based on the true story that will inspire the world, “King Richard” follows the uplifting journey of a family whose unwavering resolve and unconditional belief ultimately delivers two of the world’s greatest sports legends, as well as the circumstances that Venus and Serena faced growing up."

The production notes also delved into what Serena and Venus went through growing up.

"Armed with a clear vision and a brazen 78-page plan, Richard Williams is determined to write his daughters, Venus and Serena, into history. Training on Compton, California’s neglected tennis courts - rain or shine - the girls are shaped by their father’s unyielding commitment and their mother’s balanced perspective and keen intuition, defying the seemingly insurmountable odds and prevailing expectations laid before them," a description read.

What Director Reinaldo Marcus Green said made the film "a pretty special story," and "what's so interesting about Richard is that he did it with love," as "he never put the kind of pressure that one would assume on his children to play. He made it fun for them. And they wanted to be out there."

Smith emphasized that "the story of Richard and the story of this family is a big part of the American dream."

The film, particularly Smith's performance, has been generating Oscar buzz for months now.

In a Forbes article from October 21, when the film's trailer was released, Scott Mendelson wrote"‘King Richard’: The Best Actor Oscar Is Will Smith’s To Lose."
