Republican governors build war chest

(CNN) - The Republican Governors Association raised $22.1 million in the first half of the 2011, the group announced Tuesday.

According to the RGA, the haul eclipses figures from 2007 and outpaces totals from similar periods in 2008 and 2009.

The fundraising arm responsible for electing Republican governors now has $16.2 million cash on hand after retiring $3 million in debt. During the same period in 2007, a comparable off-cycle election year, the RGA had $8.1 million cash on hand.
