Democrats responded as if Armageddon had erupted. “Irresponsible,” complained Senate majority leader Harry Reid. Taking “a meat axe to the budget,” offered Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York. “Severe and indiscriminate,” added House minority leader Nancy Pelosi. “Dangerous,” warned the New York Times.
