“Our flag does not fly because the wind moves it. It flies with the last breath of each soldier who died protecting it.” ~ Unknown
This weekend, we celebrate Memorial Day – a day when we remember those in the military who died in service of our nation. And that’s what differentiates it from every other holiday, including Veterans Day. We are grateful for every man and woman who chooses to place their civilian life on hold, sacrificing career and family, even though it may place them in harm’s way, to serve the United States of America. But on this sacred day, we specifically pay tribute to those veterans who never made it home.
For many, it’s become the unofficial kickoff of summer, and the end of the school year – commemorated with barbecues, pool and beach days, and family gatherings. Those are all great things. But Memorial Day means much more than parties and ball games. The only reason we can freely enjoy activities such as those is due to the sacrifices made by the men and women of the U.S. military. We must always remember what this day really stands for and honor those who paid the ultimate price to serve our country and defend our freedom.

This Memorial Day, we pay tribute to the courageous heroes who perished on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day to liberate Europe from the crushing grip of the Nazis, the brave soldiers who fell in the Pacific Theater, those who were cut down on the unforgiving terrain of Korea or paid the ultimate price in Vietnam, and the men and women who have died in the ongoing War on Terror to ensure the horrors of 9/11 are never repeated. We honor every serviceman and woman who has perished while fighting to keep America safe, most without fanfare or acclaim, their names only known by their loved ones. We owe them all a debt of gratitude. Our freedom and prosperity are only possible because of their bravery.

And at a time when our country is so divided, there should be no debate about one thing – every single American is indebted to those who gave their lives to defend this country. This is at least one area where we should all be united. Because if we can’t agree to honor our fallen soldiers, then what will ever be able to agree on again?
No one wants war. And certainly, no one ever wants to see our soldiers injured or killed in the service of our country. But when that sacrifice is made, it is our duty to show our gratitude and respect.
As President Reagan stated during his 1986 address at Arlington National Cemetery:
"Today is the day we put aside to remember fallen heroes and to pray that no heroes will ever have to die for us again. It’s a day of thanks for the valor of others, a day to remember the splendor of America and those of her children who rest in this cemetery and others."
This Memorial Day weekend, take a moment to remember the brave American soldiers who gave their lives, and pray for the families and loved ones left behind. It is our sacred duty as citizens of this great nation to remember and to honor the ones who died so we may continue to live free. May we never forget their sacrifice.
