The Riots That Never Happened

The opinions expressed by columnists are their own and do not necessarily represent the views of Townhall.com.

All across America this past weekend cities went up in flames, businesses were looted, and general anarchy reigned. News reporters from CNN, MSNBC, and the three major broadcast networks, ABC, CBS, and NBC were all live on the scene showing video footage of mobs wearing red MAGA hats destroying police cars, setting fires, rampaging on the streets and battling the police.  Certainly not described as the “mostly peaceful protesters’ who torched American cities during the George Floyd summer of love.

At least that’s what one would have expected to see from the millions of MAGA Deplorables upset over the wounding of former President Donald Trump in a nearly successful assassination attempt at his campaign rally in Pennsylvania early Saturday evening. Considering how Trump supporters and Republicans in general are viewed by the so-called - and so far out of touch - “mainstream” news media.  That’s what they would have you believe anyway.

But contrary to the image of Trump supporters portrayed by the Democrats, America didn’t go up in flames this past weekend. Dummies of Joe Biden weren’t hanged in effigy and set afire. Police stations weren’t taken over. The U.S. Capitol wasn’t occupied by violent MAGA extremists. In fact there were no reports of any angry MAGA mobs anywhere creating havoc and destruction.

Americans who support the former president were certainly concerned about his condition after the attempt on his life, and they are rightly angered that anyone was able to remain undetected by the Secret Service and local law enforcement, and get close enough to nearly assassinate President Trump. How could that happen?  People want to know, they need answers so that they can begin to process what happened in their own minds.

The bullet fired by the would-be assassin came within mere millimeters of striking President Trump directly in his head. As it was, the former president did receive a wound to the upper part of his right ear that was so close to inflicting massive damage to the president’s skull as we saw in Dallas in 1963.  Certainly a wound that very likely would have been a fatal.  We cannot forget the innocent bystander and supporter of President Trump who tragically lost his life, and the two others who were seriously wounded.

Unfortunately there’s such a mistrust of the federal government that has developed over the years, but especially in more recent times  – certainly much of it justifiable considering the ‘lawfare’ employed against President Trump - that Republicans and President Trump’s die hard supporters will be skeptical of anything that the authorities in the Biden Administration provide.

Theories, some absolutely wild, outlandish, and crazy are being passed around social media as though they are fact, when they are way off the mark and untrue. A problem that only exacerbates and contributes to the mistrust of government institutions. Passing false stories around social media only serves to heighten even more the already highly charged political atmosphere we are in.

With all the ridiculous and false charges, along with the vitriol and invective that has been thrown repeatedly at former President Trump by the Democrats, the news media, Hollywood elites, and Joe Biden and even his wife Jill, it’s amazing that it took this long for a crazed individual to attempt to assassinate the former president.

When weak-minded and disturbed individuals are fed a steady stream of lies and distortions they can be influenced to act out violently.  As has often been the case in the past when political violence has occurred.

As is to be expected, President Trump’s haters in the ‘mainstream’ news media tried to lay the blame on Trump and his supporters’ rhetoric instead of on the shooter. They conveniently downplayed the hateful and inciting rhetoric used by the Democrats and their allies, including many of the very news media personalities who were later reporting on the assassination attempt who vilified President Trump, but who are now trying to lay the blame anywhere else but on themselves.  ‘CYA’ appears to be the order of the day.

I’ve been watching the news every day since the assassination attempt on President Trump for all the riots that one would expect to happen considering our recent history.  But I’ve seen not as much as a rotten tomato thrown in anger.  I guess rioting in the streets is only something Democrats condone and do.

Hopefully this tragedy will serve as a wake-up call to the news media and politicians from all sides that it’s time to start focusing on the issues and policy positions that define each candidate running for office, and make the mudslinging and hateful and dangerous rhetoric a thing of the past.  It’s gotten way out of control, and will only lead to more of the same as happened in Pennsylvania in the future.
