The Cake Recipe That Could Have Canceled Food Network

The opinions expressed by columnists are their own and do not necessarily represent the views of Townhall.com.

The Food Network isn’t one you’d think would be an epicenter for workplace drama, but you’d be incorrect. Some of the biggest scandals have hit the Big Three: ABC, CBS, and NBC. Matt Lauer was fired for numerous sexual harassment incidents, including a sordid tale about a button that locked female staffers in his office. Recently, Good Morning America became the source of palace intrigue when co-hosts Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes, both of whom were married at the time, reportedly engaged in an affair and kept this relationship a closely guarded secret before blowing up, tanking them from their anchoring posts until an investigating has concluded. No, Food Network isn’t quite up there regarding scandals, though this one is worthy enough of cancellation, especially if you’re part of the far left.

I’ve written about this before—it’s Sandra Lee’s Kwanzaa cake. Lee baked this atrocity on live television when her heinous fugazi semi-homemade show aired on the network. The cake has been described as “infamous.” Lee dodged a bullet that this episode aired in 2003, long before Twitter, Facebook, and social media became integral to marketing and communication. She would have faced a massive backlash, and rightfully so. The Left hadn’t become entirely culturally Marxist, so she could carry on this program for another eight years, but watch this Frankenstein monstrosity and tell me that she wouldn’t have faced a lefty reckoning as a white woman baking a cake for Kwanzaa folk.

The late Anthony Bourdain described it best.

“The most terrifying thing I've seen is her [Lee] making a Kwanzaa cake. Watch that clip and tell me your eyeballs don't burst into flames. It's a war crime on television. You'll scream.”

Some other YouTubers have made and tasted this culinary mutation, and shocker—they thought it was hot garbage. They didn’t say that per se, but the expression explains it all. It simply doesn’t work, but while Lee has been raked over the coals, it’s nothing compared to what could have been if she had aired this recipe two or three years ago.
