It never ceases to amaze me how left-wingers love to rewrite rules as they go along. When “innocent until proven guilty” doesn’t help their cause, they flip it on its head and pretend the old reality never existed. Since Republicans are largely timid children when it comes to a fight, Democrats are able to get away with it. But what if they weren’t?
Congressman Elijah Cummings (D-MD) loves to moralize about President Trump, particularly about his finances. There’s nothing he would like more than to gain access to Trump’s tax returns, which, if he got them, would undoubtedly have select portions mysteriously find their way to the press.
Cummings is a proponent of the idea that Donald Trump is either compromised by his past business dealings, or could be bought by foreign governments booking rooms at his hotels.
The absurdity of a billionaire being “bought off” by a few thousand dollars spent in a hotel is only a smokescreen to stir up the Democratic base. What isn’t absurd is a Congressman with a history of financial problems suddenly becoming flush thanks to his wife’s business coming into millions from companies his committee oversees.
Cummings had a history of financial problems – missed mortgage payments and tax debt – stemming, in part, from child support payments he owed to his ex-wife and two other women who were not his wife. Curiously, his new wife brought financial security.

Maya Rockeymoore Cummings, Elijah’s second wife, is the Chair of the Maryland Democratic Party. She also has a couple of side organizations that are doing extremely well thanks to businesses with business before Cummings’ committee. She’s taken in millions, in fact. Good work, if you can get it.
What’s even more weird, one of those organizations – the “non-profit” – has a legal obligation to provide financial records to anyone who requests them. These records would show how much money came in and, more interestingly, how much went out and to whom. But the groups, called the Center for Global Policy Solutions, is refusing to turn over those records.
Three organizations, the Daily Caller News Foundation, the Washington Examiner, and the National Legal and Policy Center, all requested the forms and were either ignored or refused. That’s against the law.
My first job out of college in 2001 was at the Heritage Foundation, in the book store. I was told, unambiguously, that when anyone called and requested our 990 form I was to send it to them immediately because that was the law. Yet Cummings is able to deny their release? What is she hiding?
Just imagine if she and her husband were held to the standards her husband is applying to President Trump, by anyone. The media would be all over this. Hell, the Washington Post or New York Times would have been on this story for the simple reason they were doing their jobs.
Instead, the Post ran a piece on the controversy entitled, “Maya Rockeymoore Cummings calls IRS complaint against her politically motivated.” It’s not a story about the sketchy intertwining of a Democratic Party official, her Congressman husband, and the millions and millions in “donations” from companies her husband hold sway over, it’s about how conservatives are targeting her for political reasons.
Donald Trump is presumed guilty, Democrats aren’t only presumed innocent, they’re presumed victim.
Robert Mueller was “unable to clear” the President of any wrongdoing, which is decidedly not how the justice system works how every story is framed. CNN ran a long blog posted disguised as a “fact check” because the former Special Counsel “publicly refused to exonerate” the President. Using that standard, I have no proof everyone at CNN is not either a child abuser, necrophiliac, or both. I’ve looked, but I can’t exonerate them the allegations because I have yet to find proof they don’t do it.
While we’re at it, I can’t find any proof the employees of MSNBC aren’t cheating on their spouses. If I were married to any of them, especially the on-air “talent,” I’d be worried because I can’t prove otherwise. And don’t even get me started about what I can’t prove they don’t do to farm animals and small woodland creature.
No one, rightly, would accept the idea they were guilty of something simply because they couldn’t prove themselves innocent. I suspect most of us have no alibi for what we were doing when Malaysian flight 370 disappeared, does that make us suspects? Are we now a Kafka novel?
We aren’t, but Donald Trump is. He is guilty of something, perhaps lots of things, Democrats insist, they just have to find it. Until they do, they’re going to act like they have. And their minions in the media are content to go along with it. Maybe they should be treated the same way.
