What’s So Bad about Sequestration?

The game in Washington continues.  Half-time is over and the players are back on the field.  Here we go again.  The Democrats have kicked off and it looks like the Republicans are trying to run it back.  Let’s see if this time they can play a little hardball.  Obama has got to play defense, let’s see where it goes.

The game in Washington continues.  Half-time is over and the players are back on the field.  Here we go again.  The Democrats have kicked off and it looks like the Republicans are trying to run it back.  Let’s see if this time they can play a little hardball.  Obama has got to play defense, let’s see where it goes.

After the fiscal cliff debacle which did absolutely nothing except steal more money out of people’s pockets, someone needs to draw a line in the sand and stop the nonsense.  Yeah, like that’s gonna happen.

The Sunday talk shows were filled with the same old rhetoric; the Democrats demanding more tax hikes and the Republicans insisting on spending cuts.  What about the tax hikes from the rich that the Dems just got?  Let’s see, it amounted to about $60 billion dollars in tax revenue.  Within moments Congress passed a relief bill for the victims of Hurricane Sandy that amounted to $60 billion dollars.  Well, easy come, easy go, right?

This drip, drip, drip of piecemeal deal making is not getting us anywhere.  It is lip service and stalling because no one has the guts to do anything.  Well, this time we can only hope that the Republicans take advantage of the leverage that they have.

This was Obama’s idea in the first place.  He figured during the debt ceiling crisis in 2011 that this would “never happen” because the GOP would never go for the massive defense cuts.  Well, it’s now 2013 and the Republicans have caved again and again.  They have taken their place at the poker table and folded every time, losing respect and credibility with the American people.  Well now they hold the cards that might be a winning hand.  If they stand strong and don’t flinch, what can Obama do?  He loses because he doesn’t want the domestic cuts, and his own party is fighting him on the defense situation.

If both parties are locking horns on March 1, the only thing to do is to let the sequestration take place.  I am of the belief that it won’t really be as bad as they all predict.  Everyone is wringing their hands over a disaster coming, but I have a sneaking suspicion that this is all being blown out of proportion for political gains on both sides.

If we go ahead and deal with this $1.2 trillion in cuts now and force Obama into tackling “real” tax reform, not just promising it in some distant future, maybe we can avoid a more serious and dangerous fall that is coming.  If we continue to play these games and put off cuts, tax reform and entitlement management, then we are in for a world of hurt.  As the years go by, we will see more and more debt crushing us and destroying future generations.

Everyone in Washington knows that we are in the final minutes of the game with the score tied.  The Republicans have the ball for the Hail Mary pass; will they complete it or fumble once again?
