Joe Biden is really hoping you don’t notice. Since Election Day, the Biden administration is doubling down on their assault against American energy. Just this week the White House announced new orders against offshore drilling across thousands of miles of U.S. coastline. This is just the latest executive order or administrative rule that Biden & Company are forcing on America to turn their green dream into our nightmare. The result is higher costs for families and diminished national energy security for our country.

Thankfully, a new sheriff is coming to town. To reclaim America’s position as a global energy leader, the incoming Congress and President Trump must act decisively. The following five steps, inspired by the recommendations in a report from Power the Future, outline a roadmap to energy dominance.

Repeal Joe Biden's Natural Gas Tax

Hidden in the so-called “Inflation Reduction Act,” is a "natural gas tax" that represents a direct assault on America’s energy economy. As temperatures plummet this winter, this punitive measure not only stifles production but also drives up costs for consumers, particularly on the 58 million homes dependent on natural gas for heating. Moreover, it hampers the United States’ ability to leverage its abundant natural gas reserves—a critical advantage in global energy markets.

Eliminating this fee on methane would strengthen domestic production, ensuring American families and businesses have access to affordable energy. It would also reaffirm the country’s commitment to energy independence, allowing the U.S. to serve as a reliable supplier to allies and reduce global dependence on authoritarian regimes like Russia.

Don’t Make America Bend to California’s Electric Vehicle Mandates

Because of a waiver under the Clean Air Act, California’s aggressive electric vehicle (EV) mandates hit not just those in the Golden State, but states across the country. By attempting to dictate national policy, California has set an unrealistic standard that would force Americans to adopt costly EVs regardless of feasibility or preference.

When other left-leaning states adopt California’s standards, millions are hit with a backdoor mandate. In fact, those citizens constitute approximately 52 percent of the total U.S. population.

Congress and the administration must ensure that energy policy is grounded in choice and innovation, not coercion. Congress needs to eliminate the California EV carve-out.

Eliminate the Climate Corps and Federal Climate Offices

The creation of the Civilian Climate Corps and a proliferation of federal climate-focused offices epitomizes the Biden administration's top-heavy approach to energy policy. These entities siphon taxpayer dollars into bureaucratic projects with dubious impact, just like John Kerry’s secret climate office.

Dismantling these offices and programs would free up billions of dollars that could be better spent on tangible improvements to the nation’s energy systems. Instead of funding ideological ventures, Congress should direct resources toward empowering private sector-led solutions that drive efficiency and affordability.

End Joe Biden's Natural Gas Pause

The Biden administration's de facto pause on natural gas leasing and drilling on federal lands has had a chilling effect on the energy sector. This moratorium, reportedly brought about by a social media influencer, disregards the role natural gas plays for our allies.

Restoring natural gas exports would signal a return to common-sense energy policy. It would help unlock vast reserves, create jobs, and strengthen America’s standing as an energy superpower.

Focus on Transmission Policy for Reliable and Affordable Energy

As families face high prices for energy and products requiring power, the need for modern, efficient transmission infrastructure has grown more urgent. However, current policies have created a bottleneck in transmission development, leaving the grid vulnerable to reliability issues and price spikes.

Congress and the administration must streamline permitting processes and invest in grid resilience.

These five steps are not just policy adjustments—they are a comprehensive strategy to restore America’s energy leadership. The stakes could not be higher. Rising energy costs are burdening families, stifling economic growth, and undermining national security. Meanwhile, global competitors are exploiting America’s regulatory inertia to their advantage.

President Trump and Congress have a unique opportunity to correct course. By repealing the natural gas tax, resisting California's mandates, dismantling unnecessary climate offices, lifting restrictions on natural gas development, and prioritizing transmission infrastructure, they can chart a path toward energy dominance.

Energy policy is not just about economics; it is a cornerstone of national strength. Bold action now will secure a prosperous, independent, and resilient energy future for generations to come. Affordable and reliable energy should be the foundation of American energy dominance.
