Turning the Tide: Ending Foreign Gains From American Seafood

Last week, President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order aimed at restoring competition in the U.S. seafood industry. This order promotes sustainable seafood harvesting, supports maritime jobs and coastal communities, and combats illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. As an advocate for policies that enhance America's fishing industry while protecting sustainable fish stocks over the long term, I view this action as a positive step forward. However, there are concerns that unscrupulous actors within the commercial fishing sector could undermine these objectives.

The U.S. boasts over 4 million square miles of prime fishing grounds – an invaluable resource that should primarily benefit domestic industries and communities. However, global commercial fishing conglomerates have poisoned the industry at the expense of U.S. fishermen, local economies, and ecosystems.

Foreign companies have infiltrated the U.S. market by acquiring vessels, fishing companies, processing facilities, and refrigeration storage units – consider Spanish-owned Seafreeze or Peruvian-owned Sea Fresh USA. Today, a large portion of the seafood consumed in America is processed in China, a country that leads the global seafood supply chain with more ships and processing capacity than any other nation. American fishermen face grueling hours in dangerous work environments with diminishing profits from their catch and little hope of securing funds to one day own their own vessels.

While our resources benefit China and other countries at the expense of American fishermen, these same commercial fishing operations often disregard marine life through outdated practices, resulting in hundreds of thousands of marine mammals being killed annually by entanglements with nets or traps. These irresponsible operators frequently ignore sustainable practices or fair competition principles, threatening our marine environment’s health.

President Trump's Executive Order aims to address these issues by restoring competition within our waters and ensuring American businesses can compete fairly against global conglomerates.

The current state of the U.S. seafood industry reveals a staggering trade imbalance: the White House claims nearly 90 percent of our seafood is imported. At the same time, exports have significantly dwindled over recent years. In 2023 alone, the U.S. trade deficit in seafood was $20.3 billion – underscoring the urgent need for change. The White House reports the deficit stands at over $20 billion.

Given President Trump's aversion to deficits, it is unsurprising that he has taken decisive steps to protect American interests and cast out bad actors. The Order outlines a plan designed to narrow this gap and ensure American fishermen can thrive within their waters.

Trump’s Order could represent a turning point for American seafood. However, we must remain vigilant against bad actors lurking beneath the surface who may seek opportunities contrary to national interests.

That’s why Frontiers of Freedom is proud to announce the launch of 'Conservatives for Fair Fishing.'. Conservatives for Fair Fishing is a new initiative dedicated to addressing the seafood industry's challenges. This initiative aims to provide comprehensive resources, including up-to-date news, facts, and figures. We invite everyone to stay informed and engaged with these critical issues by following our updates.
