Despite Alan Mollohan’s recent defeat, West Virginia’s 1st Congressional District remains a key battleground this November to get America back on track. West Virginia voters will have a stark choice between career politician Mike Oliverio and small businessman David McKinley.
West Virginia’s 1st Congressional District includes the northern panhandle and the cities of Wheeling, Parkersburg, Clarksburg, and Morgantown. It borders Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. Although this district was represented by liberal Democrat Alan Mollohan for nearly three decades, it has trended increasingly Republican. Voters here overwhelmingly supported John McCain with 57% of the vote in 2008. It is abundantly clear that West Virginians are opposed to the liberal Obama agenda, and being an energy-oriented coal state, they find the job-killing and punitive realities of the Cap and Trade bill especially appalling.
Democrat candidate Mike Oliverio is a career politician looking to jump up another rung on the political ladder. Over the past 18 years in the West Virginia House legislature, he has displayed a strong tendency toward padding the state budget with pork projects and tax increases and padding his own wallet with pay raises. In typical politician fashion, he refuses to tell West Virginians whether he’d vote for San Francisco liberal Nancy Pelosi as Speaker.
David McKinley has the fresh perspective that West Virginia’s 1st Congressional District deserves in Washington, DC. A seventh-generation West Virginian, David has fought for the 1st District as evidenced by his long list of accomplishments in both the private and public sectors. A civil engineer by training and education, McKinley built a successful architectural and engineering firm, creating hundreds of jobs and making his community better. David answered the call to public service and served in the West Virginia House of Delegates in the 1980s and early 1990s, where he was repeatedly recognized for his pro-life leadership and successful efforts to repeal a job-killing tax on small businesses.

According to the independent Cook Political Report, WV-01 is considered a toss-up for the fall election. It is clear that Republican have the right candidate in place who best represent the interests of West Virginia’s and defeat Cap and Trade, while Oliverio’s tax-and-spend record proves that he’ll be just another vote to put Pelosi in charge.
