'Courageous' passes 'Fireproof' in total gross
ALBANY, Ga. (BP) -- The church-made film "Courageous" has become the top-grossing film by Sherwood Baptist Church, passing its previous top film, "Fireproof."

Courageous passed Fireproof on Saturday (Dec. 17) and finished the weekend with enough to push it to $33.5 million in total gross, bettering Fireproof's $33.45 million. It is playing in fewer than 100 theaters and comes out on DVD Jan. 17.

The weekend's receipts means that each film by Sherwood Baptist Church has grossed more than its predecessor. The church -- which gets only a portion of the total gross -- also made the 2006 film "Facing the Giants."

Courageous follows the story of five men -- four of them police officers -- as they strive to become better fathers.
