BRIEF: UK abortion v. adoption

WASHINGTON (BP) -- Britain aborted more than 2,200 unborn children for every baby under 1 year old adopted in 2009, a pro-life leader has reported.

Peter Saunders, chief executive officer of the Christian Medical Fellowship in the United Kingdom, noted on his blog the contrast of 203,444 abortions on British women but only 91 adoptions of children less than a year old.

Thus, 2,236 abortions were performed in Britain for each child adopted, Saunders noted.

The overwhelming imbalance "is perhaps why Britain's new adoption czar says it might be a good idea for women with unwanted pregnancies to consider giving their babies up for adoption," Saunders commented in late July.

Saunders utilized 2009 statistics for his comparison to provide a contrast to the latest year for U.S. figures from Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

Planned Parenthood, America's No. 1 abortion provider, likewise is out-of-kilter in its abortion-to-adoption referral ratio. In 2009, its affiliates reported 332,278 abortions were performed while making only 977 referrals for adoption. The result was 340 abortions for each adoption referral.
