An Example of Real Journalism

Kirsten Powers is a liberal I respect.  Even when I'm inclined to disagree with her views, I always give her writings close attention, because she is smart and she is honest.

I have never respected her more than I do today.  She has a column in The Daily Beast that couldn't have been easy for a Democrat to write -- and which will undoubtedly result in her receiving more than her fair share of hate mail and abuse.

Powers reveals the disingenuousness of Planned Parenthood's claim that by providing contraception, it helps reduce abortion.  In fact, as she found, that's not true -- but it does help Planned Parenthood obtain its federal subsidy.  What's more, reading Planned Parenthood's mission statement, she learned that it's really nothing more than a population control organization.

Finally, Powers concludes that, "Whatever you think of abortion rights, this is not the kind of organization that taxpayers should be funding."  That's quite a brave conclusion, coming from a Democrat.

I've written on the Huffington Post, and I know how ugly the emails can get.  Kirsten Powers will be mistreated for having published this column, but for what it's worth, I think she has proved herself a true journalist: Fearless and committed -- not to an ideological agenda -- but to the truth.  Kudos to her.
