Do you feel the leaked information from a global warming alarmist organization is meaningful?

The Bush Administration named the polar bear to the “threatened species” list based on computer predictions of the anticipated loss of sea ice due to global warming Tuesday.

“Computer models predict sea ice is likely to recede in the future,” said Department of Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne. “They [polar bears] are in my judgment likely to become endangered in the foreseeable future, in this case 45 years.”

Kempthorne used a series of slides showing images of decrease polar sea ice while making his announcement. They are available here.

The polar bear’s classification as “threatened” is a step below “endangered”—a classification which would trigger massive environmental protections that would prevent energy and oil exploration in Alaska.

Officials said an “endangered” listing could not be made because there was not enough scientific evidence that greenhouse gas emissions where causing the sea ice to melt.

Kempthorne said, “Listing the polar bear as threatened can reduce avoidable losses of polar bears. But it should not open the door to use of the ESA to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from automobiles, power plants, and other sources.”

To prevent the environmental lobby from using this listing as a means to prevent domestic energy development Kempthorne proposed a rule to allow this type of activity in the area if it is permissible under standards dictated by the Mammal Protection Act.

This rule has not been adopted.

This decision was spurred by The Center for Biological Diversity, a group that sued the Department of Interior, along with Greenpeace and the Natural Resources Defense Council, to make a decision about listing the polar bear as “endangered” based on global warming concerns. The environmental lobby argues global warming has melted sea ice that polar bears walk on when hunting seals. Less ice, their logic follows, exposes the bears to drowning, cannibalism and starvation.

Their complaints come as U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services reports the polar bear population is on the rise. FWS estimates there are currently 20,000 to 25,000 polar bears, up from a record-low population of 5,000 to 10,000 in the 1950’s and 1960’s

Polar Bears
With luck, the Republican party will become extinct before the polar bears, though if the ice keeps melting as fast as it is it will be an open question about which one will go first. It is amazing how Amanda here cannot see the evidence that the ice pack is actually vanishing because the earth's temperatures are warming up under the clouds of greenhouse gases. The Northwest passage, for instance, that explorers sought for centuries to get to the spice areas of ASia, simply melted away and opened up. The polar bears bear no responsibility for this.

It is interesting that so many of the comments about oil and energy here never once mentioned the oil companies. Someone above said that "so back to the point,he who controls the oil controls nations." How right that saying is. But the oil companies are nations within nations, without borders. No one here has blamed them for the high price of gas we are getting jacked with, the speculators, the manipulators, the capitalistic forces that deliberately gouge the populace while making billions for the top guys. It is the Enron factor. The oil companies buy the politicians (they do not have to now, with the Bushies in power)and the politicians look the other way while pocketing the difference that we pay for. AT least some of us liberals are calling them into question now. It is not enough.

What is also interesting about the Saudies and Bush is how irrelevant Bush has become now, how he has led this country to become an economic backwater that is chronically in debt to everyone else. Now no one cares about him...and us.

Destroying the country
Well, now the Repukeians have weighed in with the Dems and Mr. Greenjeans, John McCain to, in effect, say that global warming is true. It isn't but don't tell the Bushies that. The Polar Bears will outlive the American taxpayer.
Everytime you go to the pump and watch the price of a gallon go over 6$, thank a politician who sees a polar bear, which has quintupled its population without the EPA or Endangered Mammal List as worth the billions it costs to keep it alive.
The Bush Administration does have an energy policy which consists of harranguing the Saudis to lower and or ship more oil to us. They wont, of course. Russia gives tax breaks to oil exploration; France heats its country with Nukes, and we stagger on, the laughing stock of the free world, sitting on enough energy to supply our needs for the next 700 years. We will never build refineries, nuclear power plants, drill in ANWR or off our coasts, [the Chinese are drilling off our shores] or tap our massive coal reserves. We will just continue our slide into Third-world status.
Deal with it!
