Letters From A Michigan Jail: Well, This Former Corrupt Democratic Mayor Seems To Like Trump

It seems there are some Democrats who like Trump. And I’m talking about elected officials. Yes, there are definitely Trump-supporting Democrats out there. They may be in the bunker, but you don’t trounce Hillary the way you do in Ohio in 2016 without some help from across the aisle. He may be in jail for nearly 30 years for corruption, but former Democratic mayor of Detroit Kwame Kilpatrick appears to be a Trump supporter, praising the president for his accomplishments, and oh yeah; asking him to commute his sentence (via MLive):

I applaud your boldness and tenacity in confronting the traditional and sometimes deformed politics of our country,” Kilpatrick writes.

He goes on to glorify Trump for bucking the traditional political system and says he prays daily for Trump’s success. He also includes 20 pages detailing the reasons why he believes his sentence should be commuted.

Kilpatrick was sentenced to 28 years in prison after he was convicted in 2013 on several charges including racketeering, bribery and extortion. His earliest scheduled release date is in 2037. The 48-year-old Kilpatrick asked Trump for help last summer by seeking a pardon, but the president has not responded.

Kilpatrick’s request for a commuted sentence does not mean his crimes would be vacated if granted. Instead he could be released from prison but the conviction would remain on his record or Trump could elect to reduce the sentence.

Deadline Detroit has more on the letter:

I first want to congratulate you for the overwhelming and stunning victories of your Presidential campaign, and also the unprecedented success of your first two-years in office. You have shaken up the entire world...and that is a great thing to behold," Kilpatrick, a lifelong Democrat wrote in an April 16 letter obtained by Deadline Detroit. "I pray your success daily!"

The two-page cover letter includes a 20-page attachment in which Kilpatrick questions the feds' case against him, point by point, and accuses the judge and his trial attorney of having a conflict of interest.

"I applaud your boldness and tenacity in confronting the traditional and sometimes deformed politics of our country. You have vociferously exposed the treacherous and calculating schemes of our media and government that have worked to crush families, communities, and even Truth itself. Thank you for standing up, speaking out, and exposing this wickedness."

Whether Kilpatrick’s views are true is unknown. Maybe he does feel that Trump is shaking up the system or it could be done to butter up Trump in the hope that he gets an early release from jail. The release date of 2037 is a long ways away. I’d bet most would be willing to say just about anything to the person who could potentially sign their ‘get out of jail’ card.
