Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) is planning to run for president in 2020 if it means he has a shot at beating President Donald Trump.
“I’m not one of those sons of multimillionaires whose parents told them they were going to become president of the United States,” Sanders told New York Mag. “I don’t wake up in the morning with any burning desire that I have to be president.”
Sanders believes that his policy goals, like Medicare For All, are something the average American can get behind once they're made aware of the possibilities.
"If there’s somebody else who appears who can, for whatever reason, do a better job than me, I’ll work my ass off to elect him or her" but “if it turns out that I am the best candidate to beat Donald Trump, then I will probably run," he explained.
The Senator from Vermont made similar comments last week, saying his teem was "looking at" a potential 2020 presidential run, The Hill reported.
“I will make that decision at the appropriate time,” Sanders said on MSNBC's "PoliticsNation with Al Sharpton."
“And I will be honest with you, you are a friend," Sanders told Sharpton. "You know, we’re looking at it. But it’s a decision that impacts your family. And I want to make sure that when I make that decision, if I decide to run, that I have concluded, in fact, that I am the strongest candidate who can defeat Donald Trump."
Sanders, a self-described socialist, has been one of Trump's most outspoken opponents. The one thing he was successful at during the 2016 presidential election was firing up the progressive activist base, many of whom were upset that Hillary Clinton received the Democratic nomination.
