Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) responded to a report Thursday that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) had asked President Trump to nominate Judge Merrick Garland to fill the vacancy left on the Supreme Court by Justice Anthony Kennedy’s retirement.

According to the Washington Post, Schumer privately urged Trump to nominate Garland in order to “help unite the country” and claimed that nominating a justice hostile to Roe v. Wade would damage Trump’s legacy.
McConnell blocked Garland’s nomination by President Obama in 2016. Invoking the Biden rule, he argued that a Supreme Court justice shouldn't be confirmed to the bench during an election year.
This is not the first time McConnell’s account has mocked his political opponents.

He had a goodbye tweet for Don Blankenship, the West Virginia GOP Senate candidate who launched racial attacks on McConnell’s family and gave him the epithet “Cocaine Mitch.” Just after Blankenship’s crushing loss, McConnell tweeted an image incorporating elements from the show “Narcos.”
