The ACLU had a record-setting fundraising weekend on Saturday and Sunday, and raised over $24 million after President Trump signed an executive order regarding immigration.
The ACLU normally raises about four million dollars through online donations in an entire year. Over 350,000 people made a donation to the ACLU over the weekend. The ACLU's spokesperson was stunned by the size of the response.
The call to arms to support the group was spread mostly through Twitter, with several influential celebrities urging people to donate.
By Sunday evening, the ACLU said it had received $19.4 million in donations. At the end of the night, the group ran "one last set of numbers" for the weekend, according to a spokesman, and ended up at $24,164,691.
The donations came from 356,306 people, many of whom had never supported the group before.
The spokesman's one word reaction: "Wow."
"Wow," indeed.
