First, huge thanks to the first responders who were on high alert during Winter Storm Jonas. The blizzard has ended, but in Virginia, state police responded to over 6,000 service calls, including over 1,400 coming from car crashes (via WJLA):
Virginia State Police have responded to a total of 6,883 calls for service, which includes 1,427 traffic crashes and 2,122 vehicles across the state of Virginia.VSP say the Hampton Roads region experienced the most traffic crashes with state troopers responding to 541 crashes in their Chesapeake Division.
VSP say the Metro-Richmond and Northern Virginia regions have had the most disabled, stuck vehicles. State Police of the Richmond Division responded to 588 disabled vehicles, while the State Police of the Fairfax Division responded to 568 vehicles.
According to the Weather Channel, 37 people were killed during the storm. In some areas, plow trucks simply did not show up. They reported an entire neighborhood in Queens, New York was neglected, prompting New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio to offer an apology for not doing enough. In Virginia, a home burned to the ground Sunday because the road leading to it was left unplowed.
