Maybe having a monarch isn't quite that bad. Okay, okay, hear me out. I've been reflecting a lot on the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II and the whole precession of mourners over the past week and a half. It struck me as I was observing and recognizing the historical significance of the moment that the people of Great Britain, the people of London, and the people of the Commonwealth who flew to England upon hearing the news of the death of their monarch were willing to stand in line for more than 13 hours, quietly, stoically, respectfully, for one last moment to stand in front of Queen Elizabeth's coffin to pay their final respects. I don't think we Americans can fully relate to this, and that's kind of my point.
