The Met Police Commissioner is admitting his officers once again 'dropped the ball' by investigating Jack Grove, a reporter with Times Higher Education (THE), while Grove was conducting investigative work involving Jason Arday, the Cambridge University professor who resigned yesterday amid accusations of plagiarism and academic fraud. Arday's lawyers sent a letter to THE saying the investigation was "racially motivated" and an "attack" on Arday. Arday himself reportedly contacted Scotland Yard and told authorities Grove's questioning was harming his mental health.

That sparked a four-month investigation by Scotland Yard that, while finding no wrongdoing, ended with an officer telling Grove not to contact Arday anymore.

Here's more:

It has emerged that a journalist who emailed Arday with questions about his academic record was ordered by police to stop contacting the professor because it had affected his "mental health".

The Met Police spent four months looking into the harassment claim before closing the case in February.

The journalist, Jack Grove, was not interviewed and only learned of the investigation when the Met got in touch to inform him that the case had been closed, the Telegraph reports.

Asked by Nick why police had spent four months investigating the journalist, Sir Mark said: "In hindsight we shouldn't have done that. We shouldn't have made that call to him."

A row has engulfed Mr Arday, a sociology of education professor at Cambridge, over claims he plagiarised parts of his PhD thesis, lied about his academic record and made inflated claims about his sporting achievements and charity work.

Too little, too late.

It's clear the Met Police has a standard: if a black person, a Sikh, or a Muslim says they're the victim of someone hurting their feelings, the police automatically believe them, regardless of facts. This is what got Henry Nowak killed. Nowak was stabbed by a Sikh man who told police Nowak said racist things. The police cuffed Nowak, ignored his clear distress, and even said Nowak hadn't been stabbed. Nowak died drowning in his own blood.

We suppose Grove got off light.

Yes. This is the bare minimum.

Exactly. These things keep happening, so they're not errors. They're deliberate choices made by law enforcement who fear being racist more than they care about investigating actual crimes.
