Gang of 8 Proposal Looking Just Like Obama Wants?

The Senate Gang of 8 is getting ready to present its illegal immigration reform package sometime this month and according to White House adviser Dan Pfeiffer, the deal is shaping up to be exactly what President Obama is looking for.

On Sunday, White House adviser Dan Pfeiffer said the negotiators’ proposal is “100 percent consistent with what the president is doing so we feel very good about it."

However, he declined to say on “Fox News Sunday” whether Obama  would sign legislation making a path to citizenship contingent on first securing the border.

No comment on securing the border first? Does President Obama was immigration reform to die? After all, the only hope for a deal is contingent on Democrats agreeing to a deal that in fact secures the border before offering amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants already in the United States. Not to mention, a majority of voters will only support reform package if it includes a provision to secure the border before offering a path to citizenship.

Just 26% support a plan that would provide legal status for those already in the country illegally who otherwise have obeyed the law if it doesn’t include tougher border control. Fifty-eight percent (58%) oppose a plan stripped of this provision.

As a reminder, Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and President Obama have said a path to citizenship should not be contingent on border security, a position that would kill any reform package put forward that requires absolute border security before a path to citizenship for more than 11 million illegal immigrants.

According to ICE Council President Chris Crane, the public details of the current Gang of 8 package do not show a strong enough push for border security or enforcement of immigration laws already on the books.

"The plan of the Gang of 8 appears to be legal immigration or amnesty first and then enforcement. That’s the big problem for us… We know much stronger interior enforcement is needed but continues to be ignored by the President and others because this is more about amnesty or legalization than truly addressing illegal immigration…Here’s my promise to America, if we don’t take care of the enforcement part of this first it will never happen. The only thing that will happen is that 11 million illegal aliens will be legalized," Crane said.
