New Jersey Boy Scouts Pay $18,000 in Reparation Money to Transgender Boy

A branch of the Boy Scouts of America in New Jersey has made peace with a 9-year-old transgender boy who was denied from joining the club.

A payment of  $18,000 was issued as a form of apology to the family of Joe Maldonado after his mother filed a civil rights complaint, according to ABC News.

Joe has since been accepted into the Maplewood Cub Scout pack, a nearby club of the mother's choosing.  Kristie Maldonado said that her son has been doing "phenomenal" as a member of the Maplewood pack.

A spokeswoman for the Boy Scouts of America said the organization is "happy to welcome Joe and the Maldonado family back into the Scouting community."
