A Majority of American Voters Want Gays To Serve, But Not Openly

American voters want gays to serve in the military by a margin of 57 to 36 percent, according to a poll out today by Quinnipiac. Even more Americans believe that not allowing them to do so amounts to discrimination — 66 percent, compared to 31 percent.

But 54 percent, compared with 38 percent, say gays in the military "should face restrictions on exhibiting their sexual orientation on the job."

In other words, a majority of Americans supports some version of the current "don't ask, don't tell" policy.
