Obama Camp: Okay, Maybe We Did Know Soptic's Story After All

We've seen the denial, the smoking-gun lie, and now it's time for the sheepish and misleading back-track:

Obama campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki acknowledged Thursday that the campaign was no longer pleading ignorance about the story of a man who has appeared in both a super PAC ad and a campaign ad. "No one is denying he was in one of our campaign ads. He was on a conference call telling his story," Psaki told reporters on Air Force One.

Actually, Jen, you were foreswearing any knowledge of the Soptic family story -- like, two days ago.  Let me refresh your memory:

Jen Psaki told reporters on Air Force One that "we don't' have any knowledge of the story of the family."

By "we," you were referring to the Obama campaign -- the group on whose behalf you are paid to speak -- which, in fact, has chosen to share its explicit knowledge of "the story of the family" by showcasing it in ads and conference calls.  We've also learned that in addition to Mrs. Soptic maintaining her own insurance after her husband was laid off by an Obama campaign bundler, Soptic himself was actually offered a buyout from Bain -- which he refused.  These facts were all mysteriously left out of the Obama SuperPAC ad.  The Romney campaign has seen about enough.  Here's spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg:

President Obama’s campaign has been caught lying about its knowledge concerning a vicious smear run by his Super PAC.  And now, they have doubled down with another dishonorable and dishonest attack. In 2008, candidate Obama said ‘you make a big election about small things’ when you don’t have a record to run on.  Since President Obama can’t run on record unemployment, falling incomes, and massive debt, he has decided to run a dirty campaign that is an affront to everything he claims to stand for.

Here's the flashback video of Obama pretending to be all righteously opposed to nasty attacks in 2008, as his disciples showered him with amens:

Republicans aren't the only ones galled by Obamaworld's vicious and cynical about-face:

Lanny Davis, a former top adviser to President Bill Clinton, today issued a scathing rebuke to a controversial new Democratic super PAC ad that ties Mitt Romney to a woman’s death from cancer. “I’m pretty sad for our country that we have presidential candidates engaging in sophomoric — and that’s a compliment — sophomoric name calling,” Davis said in an interview on WMAL radio in Washington. “Bill Burton needs to go back to ethics school,” Davis said of the group’s senior strategist, who is a former Obama White House spokesman.  “He knows perfectly well that the ad is misleading and disgusting and he needs to apologize for it.”

Don't hold your breath for an Obama apology.  He's too busy condemning Republican SuperPACs for running issue-based ads criticizing him to clean up his own egregious mess.
