Another Way to Grow the Public Sector

"The Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act" sounds great on the surface, insofar as it's supposed to steer talented people to government service.  And of course, talented government workers are better than the alternative.

But in the rush to pass the act, a lot may be being overlooked, as this IBD editorial points out.  Encouraging smart young people to work for the government is a great way to make sure that government remains a dominant force in American life -- and, indeed, grows ever bigger.  What's more, in my experience, these programs tend to have a distinctly leftward tilt.

So before Republicans like Orrin Hatch congratulate themselves too hard on this bill's relatively easy passage, it might be worth thinking about a few of its implications.
