Des Moines Register Endorses Elizabeth Warren for President

Democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren has won the endorsement of the Des Moines Register editorial board. In an article announcing their endorsement of Sen. Warren (D-MA), the Register claims their decision was a hard one to make because, the paper argues, "Each of the remaining candidates campaigning across Iowa ahead of the caucuses could make a fine president."

Who would make the best president at this point in the country’s history? At a time when the economic deck has become so stacked against working Americans that the gap between rich and poor is the highest in more than 50 years? At a time when a generation of war has stressed military families and sapped the treasury?

The Des Moines Register editorial board endorses Elizabeth Warren in the 2020 Iowa Democratic caucuses as the best leader for these times.

The senior U.S. senator from Massachusetts is not the radical some perceive her to be. She was a registered Republican until 1996. She is a capitalist. “I love what markets can do,” she said. “They are what make us rich, they are what create opportunity.”

In a separate article, the Register explains its process for endorsing presidential candidates, which the newspaper has done since 1988. According to the article, the newspaper began interviewing the presidential candidates beginning in Dec. 2018. In total, the board interviewed 20 candidates, some of which have since dropped out of the race, and five who accepted an invitation for a second interview. Warren was reportedly not interviewed a second time, but after "[s]ubsequent conversations and more thought and reading," the board settled on its choice of Elizabeth Warren.

The Register claimed each of the remaining candidates campaigning in Iowa "would treat truth as something that matters," prompting critics on Twitter to quickly point out some of the bigger lies the Massachusetts senator has been caught telling.

Upon receiving the news, Warren was caught celebrating the paper's endorsement.

The endorsement comes just a little more than a week before the Iowa state caucuses on Feb. 3rd.
