James Hodgkinson opened fire on congressional Republicans Wednesday morning, severely wounding House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA). He also wounded congressional staffers and members of the Capitol Police. Hodgkinson fired somewhere between 50-60 shots during the attack before being shot by police. He later died of his injuries. Rep. Scalise is doing considerably better, but remains in critical condition after threes surgeries. A press conference by Dr. Jack Sava at the MedStar Washington Medical Center reported that the Louisiana congressman was on the verge of death when he arrived.
Now, the Daily Caller is reporting that an assassination list was found on Hodgkinson, and if true, had three members of the conservative House Freedom Caucus on it:
James T. Hodgkinson, the shooter who opened fire on dozens of Republican congressmen and staffers at a baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia, on Wednesday, had a list of Republican names in his pocket that was recovered by the FBI, The Daily Caller has learned.
The news that the shooter had a list of names suggests the shooting was not a random outburst, but instead appears to be a premeditated political assassination.
The list was written out on notepad paper and found in the shooter’s pocket, according to multiple sources with intimate knowledge of the situation, who spoke on condition of anonymity, citing the sensitivity of the investigation. The list of names included Alabama Rep. Mo Brooks, South Carolina Rep. Jeff Duncan and Arizona Rep. Trent Franks, TheDC has confirmed.
The FBI has contacted at least one of the three congressmen to inform them of their inclusion on the list.
The FBI also recovered a cell phone, a computer and a camera in the shooter’s van and is processing the items, according to a statement the agency issued on Thursday.
We’ll keep you updated on this matter. Hodgkinson reportedly ran into Reps. Jeff Duncan (R-SC) and Ron DeSantis (R-FL), as they were leaving the field and asked them if the players practicing were Democrats or Republicans. Moments later, shot were fired.
